- Age. One of the best indicators for needing a new water heater is the age of your current one. If your water heater is over a decade old, it’s on the decline and will begin to encounter some problems you haven’t faced. By purchasing a new water heater now, you won’t need to spend as much on repairs or worry about disastrous water damage.
- Sediment or rust. If you turn a faucet on and the water coming out is rusty instead of clear, you have a problem. Now, this could be a sign that your water heater needs to be flushed out, but if you’ve already done so recently then call a professional for assistance.
- No hot water. This one is pretty obvious, but if you’re consistently dealing with no hot water in your house, it’s time to upgrade and move on, because, at that point, your water heater is nothing more than a glorified storage tank.
- Frequent repairs. If you find yourself calling your plumber every month with questions and concerns about your water heater, then it’s probably time for a new one. Like we said before, you should be able to install your water heater and forget about it (for the most part).
Types of Water Heaters
You’re probably familiar with the standard tank water heater and maybe even the newer tankless models, but there are a variety of other models to consider.
Some of the most common types of water heaters are:
- Conventional storage water heaters are a common option and offer a ready reservoir (tank) of hot water.
- Tankless or on-demand water heaters heat water directly without the use of a storage tank. Contrary to popular belief, the water is not instantly hot, you will still have a waiting period before the water is at your desired temperature.
- Heat pump water heaters move heat from one place to another instead of generating heat directly for your hot water.
- Solar water heaters, as you can imagine, use the sun’s heat to provide hot water. These are less popular than the other options we’ve mentioned.
No matter which type of water you go with, you’ll see savings in energy and water when you upgrade to a newer more efficient model.
